The back is easy to pop open and I will say after a short while of having it my kids have lost all the "balls" that come with it. It is a cute little latern and that part works fine. I just dont really care for it because there's not really much to do with it.

There is so much to open and look at and play with. She loves running to her room and turning off the lights to use the lantern feature. We have it at her bedside at night and she turns it on before she goes to bed. Super fun.

There is also a lantern with different colored crystal shaped containers inside, and when the lantern is lit, the color changes depending on which crystals are inside. My son had a lot of fun playing with this toy, even though we have never seen any My Little Pony movies.
